At Midoricon 2013, I got a chance to sit down with everyone’s favorite scary YouTuber, Mr. CreepyPasta. For those who don’t know, creepypastas are stories that are posted online and spread around. Mr. CreepyPasta has done and excellent job of bringing these stories to life by reading them on his channel, which a link will be provided at the bottom of this page.

Zach: Alright, first and foremost, we’ll start with the obvious question: How did you first get into reading creepypastas on YouTube?
Mr. CreepyPasta: I love being asked that question because it comes along with a story. First let me ask you this: What motivates man? Don’t say money.
Z: Attention?
MCP: Women. The reason I started doing creepypasta reading was because of an ex-girlfriend. She was really big into horror at the time, and I wanted to do something to get her attention. At the time I didn’t know of anyone else who was reading creepypastas on YouTube and I honestly thought it was a stupid thing, you know YouTube was a video site and I’d be making videos that were just audio. So I made a few and showed them to her and she absolutely hated them. So I stopped for a bit and left the channel alone until I noticed that they were getting more and more views so I got back into reading them.
Z: What was the first creepypasta you ever read?
MCP: The first one I recall ever reading was one called “Crazy Dolls” if you have ever read that.
Z: What was your first reaction to that?
MCP: Honestly, I think I found it more interesting than anything. I read it and thought “Oh wow, that’s freaky”. At the time I was reading them on 4chan; this was before they made the /x/ board and I was like “Oh wow, what are these called.”
Z: Was your first creepypasta your favorite or do you have a different favorite?
MCP: That’s something a lot of people ask me, you know “What’s your favorite creepypasta?”. I don’t actually like answering that because I may think “Oh well that was a horrible choice because of all of them that I’ve done”. I can tell you that I like to portray the Jeff the Killer character, but actually I hate the story. A lot of the stories I like have a twist the kind of pop up at the end, and those are the stories that have no pasta monsters whatsoever. That’s probably why I like them so much because they are a new perspective on horror with just vague enough that you get the idea of the story, but you still have to figure out what’s going on.
Z: If you could have tea with any creepypasta character who would it be? Personally I’d like to have tea with Slender Man; he’s always dressed for the occasion.
MCP: That is a horrifying question. Slender Man? There’s a problem with that. Remember if you look at him you’re automatically dead so you can’t really sit down for tea with him.
Z: Well you’d have that problem with almost any creepypasta monster.
MCP: That’s why it’s horrifying. I would sit down with a character like Sally from the “Play With Me” series if you’re familiar with that. You know she’s just a sweet little girl.
Z: And she’d jump at the chance for a tea party.
MCP: Right. And you know, you’d be completely safe having tea with her since she only goes after rapists you know?
Z: There’s a lot of hate online on places like the Unforums towards the Jeff the Killer creepypasta for being poorly written and an all around stupid story with things like 14 year olds having guns. What are your thoughts on this?
MCP: I’ll tell you this. The Jeff the Killer original story, it was very poorly written. When I first read the Jeff the Killer story, I thought it was terrible. There’s several bad points in the story. Like the cops in the story they take Jeff’s brother and put him in jail without any sort of trial, and in that story Jeff was supposed to be around 12 or 13. And yeah, with the 14 year olds having weapons, I don’t know I haven’t been that young in quite a while so may be a thing with kids these days. But a lot of it was very “fan-fictiony” kind of writing. To me, the actual character of Jeff the Killer won out over the poorly written story because everyone liked the idea of just a straight crazy person and he became kind of the Jason Voorhees of the creepypasta world. I mean the Jason Voorhees movies are absolutely terrible but the character is amazing. So a lot of the hate, I feel like it’s justified, but it’s not necessarily deserving of it. That’s why I try to do some modifying with it like I did with Jeff vs Jane, and right now I’m still working on the next part to that. I’m actually changing the main story just slightly. I changed Jeff’s age so he’s not 12, I’m changing it so he’s 17. I also changed some other stuff around to make the story a little less nonsensical because I really admire that character, and I really like playing him and getting into his character.
Z: You don’t run around in a white hoodie and break into houses do you?
MCP: Haha, that’s crazy method acting. I’m not out there yet. Talk to me again in like, three years. But no, no, I still love the Jeff the Killer character and I do feel the hate can be justified, but the story doesn’t really deserve it.

Z: You just kind of answered my next question a little bit. Do you actually take some liberties with the stories and change them maybe to make them flow better a little bit while reading or so they make a little more sense?
MCP: I try my best not to, I try to keep them original. There was a couple of times I know where I made some changes as far as gender goes because it’s a little confusing whenever I’m trying to read a female part because my voice is that of a guy, and there may be a part where it may say “oh my boyfriend did this” and it gets a little weird and confusing. I did make a rather large omission to the”Dating Game” because I didn’t feel comfortable reading the part where the infant gets murdered. Otherwise, I don’t change anything and it’s extremely rare that I do.
Z: Do you ever have creepypasta dreams?
MCP: Absolutely yes. I used to tell my friends that I actually have nightmares all the time, but it’s not that big of a thing. Like any dream, you wake up and think “Oh that was freaky” and then go about your day, so it doesn’t really affect me. But honestly, having nightmares all the time it kind of has helped me with what I do.
Z: What are the chances you’ll let me kidnap you and take you home to read me bedtime stories? I promise my closet is very comfortable.
MCP: You got candy?
Z: I can give you all the candy you want. I’ll feed and water you and take you for walks everyday.
MCP: Uh, um….if I was in your closet I couldn’t make anymore videos on YouTube.
Z: I’ve got Wi-Fi at my house, it’s high speed.
MCP: Oh ok then, yeah let’s do it then sounds great!
Z: That’s all I have, thanks for the interview!
MCP: Thanks for wanting to interview me!
