Some ghosts are cursed to eat the bodies of the dead. The punishment points to how impure the soul was in life. In the case of this folktale, a priest is punished with this fate. In Japan's fairy tales, these sorts of punishments happen because of karma, the law of cause and effect. If someone is greedy in life, in death their greed will make them hunger. If a priest lives impurely and violating his vows, in death his ghost will continue the trend. Fairy tales like this point to how we punish ourselves and receive the fruit of our actions. While this doesn't always happen in life, we can't escape our karma in death.
