Attack on Titan

Posted on June 1, 2014May 23, 2016 by Chris Kincaid

Every once in a while an anime will grip me. Attack on Titan left me wanting more after each episode. I heard a fair bit about it, but I was reluctant to give it a watch. I tend to avoid anime that have a lot of hype. Generally hype doesn’t skew my expectations; I watch…

Posted on April 13, 2014May 23, 2016 by Chris Kincaid

Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040

Posted on April 6, 2014May 23, 2016 by Chris Kincaid

Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040 takes a page from Super Sentai, mixes in some power suits a-la Metroid, and throws in a dash of Final Fantasy. This anime retells an OVA called Bubblegum Crisis. Seven years after an earthquake almost destroyed Tokyo, androids with a fair level of intelligence are being used to rebuild the city….

Origin: Spirits of the Past

Posted on March 23, 2014May 23, 2016 by Chris Kincaid

Trees shattering the moon is quite a different idea. Origin takes place in a post-apocalyptic world ravaged by genetically engineered plants. It is a rather novel idea, but the movie cuts the good and evil – technology verses environment too sharply. Agito is a rash boy at home in the ruins of the past. After…

Guilty Crown

Posted on March 16, 2014June 9, 2024 by Chris Kincaid

Guilty Crown drew me in with the animation of the first episode. The little touches in the way the characters moved screamed Production I.G.. Unfortunately, the quality of the animation throughout the series wasn’t on par with other works by the anime studio. In any case, Guilty Crown has some interesting things going for it….

Trees have souls. Some trees become so much a part of the family that they can be trusted to look over the family's welfare. When Gobei fritters away his family's wealth, a willow decides to step in. Trees have important roles in Japanese fairy tales, but tree stories remain largely unknown. Fairy tales prove the elderly can have adventures too. In this story, an old man faces down a host of demons and loses a tumor on his cheek as a reward. When a neighbor hears of this, he wants to lose his own tumor. Of course, this intention ends up backfiring on him! Folklore explores the importance of intention for our actions. Good and pure intentions offers their own rewards; selfish intentions, however, receive their rewards too. The idea that you harvest what you plant appears throughout the world's folklore.
